Justin Sun Loses Diplomatic Status As Grenada Ambassador

Published Friday 31st March 2023

Justin Sun, the founder of Tron blockchain and a well-known cryptocurrency figure, has lost his diplomatic status as Grenada's ambassador to the World Trade Organization (WTO). Sun was appointed as Grenada's ambassador to the WTO in 2020 by the then-ruling New National Party (NNP) government of Grenada. However, he reportedly lost his diplomatic status in June 2022 after the NNP lost power in the country's general elections held in March 2022. The new government of Grenada, led by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), recalled all diplomats appointed by the previous government, including Sun.

The revocation of Sun's diplomatic status has raised questions about his legitimacy as a representative of Grenada to the WTO. Sun, however, claims that he continues to represent Grenada at the WTO, despite the government's recall order. He has also stated that he is in regular communication with the Grenadian government and is working to resolve the issue. The government of Grenada, on the other hand, has not commented on Sun's claims and has not issued any statement confirming or denying his continued representation of the country at the WTO.

The controversy surrounding Sun's ambassadorship to Grenada is not new. When his appointment was first announced in 2020, it was met with criticism and skepticism from some quarters. Critics argued that Sun's appointment was a dubious move by the NNP government aimed at bolstering Grenada's profile in the international community. Some also pointed out that Sun had no previous diplomatic experience or expertise in trade matters, which made his appointment questionable.

Despite the criticisms, Sun took up his ambassadorship and has been actively promoting Grenada's interests at the WTO. He has also been involved in promoting the use of blockchain technology in Grenada and the wider Caribbean region. Sun's blockchain company, Tron, has partnered with several Caribbean countries, including Grenada, to explore the use of blockchain in various sectors, such as agriculture, tourism, and financial services.

It remains to be seen how the situation with Sun's ambassadorship will be resolved. The controversy has highlighted the need for greater scrutiny and transparency in the appointment of diplomatic representatives, particularly in small island states like Grenada. It has also raised questions about the role of blockchain and cryptocurrency figures in diplomatic circles and their suitability for such roles. As the blockchain industry continues to grow and gain mainstream acceptance, these issues are likely to become more prominent and require careful consideration and oversight.
